1918/7-D Nickel, AU58
Scarce Overdate Issue, FS-101

1918/7-D 5C FS-101 AU58 NGC. The Bowers Guide Book estimates a production (not survival) of 100,000 coins for the 1918/7-D Buffalo nickel--an overgenerous number, in our view--but, nonetheless, it is an issue where the survival rate is less important than the condition of the survivors. Given that 13 years passed between the production and the first mention in an auction catalog (Barney Bluestone, 10/1931), most of the survivors today range from Very Good to Very Fine. Coins below Very Good make it difficult to distinguish the overdate feature. Most examples are struck from eroded dies, although a few sharply struck pieces exist. The great preponderance of examples also show a die break at the top the Indian's braid, which in the latest state extends to the mouth (as seen here). This is nondiagnostic, however, as some specimens lack the die break, and some 1918-D nonoverdate pieces also show a similar die break.

Light gray and golden patina cover each side with significant underlying mint luster. A few tiny specks of carbon can be found on the obverse, but all in all this is an attractive and unusually high-grade example of this scarce overdate. Census: 31 in 58, 48 finer (8/15).
