Description
1918/7-D Nickel, AU58
Pleasing, Problem-Free Surfaces
1918/7-D 5C FS-101 AU58 PCGS. CAC. The diagonal of the 7 is
straight, and two "ears" show on each side of the upper portion of
the 8. This is the major overdate among Buffalo nickel issues and
arguably the key to the entire series. As a result, demand is
perennially strong for examples across all grade levels. The
variety results from two different hubs used to prepare the die,
which was first struck with a 1917-dated hub, annealed, and
subsequently impressed with a hub dated 1918. The employment of
insufficiently skilled laborers at the Mint during the war years is
usually given as the reason this and other contemporary overdate
issues were produced. This is an exceptionally attractive coin with
significant satiny mint luster evident beneath the even golden
patina that covers each side. Problem-free surfaces.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22RJ, Variety PCGS# 38446, Base PCGS# 3939)
