Description

1918/7-D Nickel, MS62
Popular Doubled-Hub Variety

1918/7-D 5C FS-101 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Like most 20th-century overdates, the 1918/7-D nickel was the result of double hubbing when an obverse die created with a 1917-dated hub was then rehubbed with one bearing the 1918 date, apparently produced late in the former year as the Philadelphia die shop prepared coinage dies for 1918. The error die was then sent to Denver where it was placed into service early in 1918.

The obverse die features a bold 7 under the 8 in the date, and a delicate die crack across the Indian's cheek starts just above the hair braid, confirming the authenticity of this exceptional Mint State survivor that features peripheral gold toning and faint violet centers. Population: 14 in 62 (1 in 62+), 37 finer. CAC: 6 in 62, 6 finer (11/22).
