Description

Elusive Gem 1918-S Buffalo Nickel

1918-S 5C MS65 NGC. Specialists have long recognized the 1918-S as the rarer of the two mintmarked issues from this year. It is rarely seen with complete definition on each side. This piece shows well above-average sharpness on the reverse, while the obverse is typically a bit weak on the Indian's hair above the knot. Bright mint frost covers each side with an overlay of attractive pale reddish patina. Just a couple of minor bagmarks are seen, none worthy of singular mention. The "beard" clash mark below the Indian's chin is from the motto on the reverse, an interesting foible that several early S-mint Buffalo issues show. An elusive and in-demand Gem. Census: 9 in 65, 0 finer (7/07).(Registry values: N7079)
