Description

Elusive, Sharply Struck Gem 1918-S Buffalo Nickel

1918-S 5C MS65 NGC. The 1918-S is among the most elusive of the mintmarked Buffalo nickel issues from the teens, and in Gem condition it is seldom seen. Many of the NGC and PCGS Registry Sets featuring Gem or finer coins have an MS64 example for the 1918-S nickel. That is borne out by the grading service figures, which show a total of only three-and-a-half-dozen Gems at both combined, with two pieces finer (8/08).
This lustrous silver-gold Gem example shows tinges of sky-blue on both sides, with a marvelous strike on the high points, the horn, and the split tail. The eye appeal is every bit what one would expect from the Gem ranking. This is an issue that has seen a considerable surge in price in recent years, recognition of both its popularity and rarity. Census: 12 in 65, 1 finer (8/08).(Registry values: N7079)
