Description

1918-S Nickel, Lightly Toned MS65
Lustrous and Sharply Struck

1918-S 5C MS65 PCGS. CAC. Far more so than its earlier neighbor the 1917-S and about tied with the renowned 1919-S, the 1918-S Buffalo nickel in Gem condition is deucedly difficult, and anything in finer grades is virtually impossible to obtain. PCGS shows only 34 submissions in MS65 with two in MS65+ and a single MS66 finer (3/14). This piece, certified in an old green-label holder with the CAC approval, will certainly gain the attention of dedicated series specialists hoping to "fill" that elusive hole in their sets. The frosty surfaces show excellent luster complementing dabs of pale jade and ice-blue near the date that contrast against the prevailing pinkish hues on both sides, a simply beautiful coin. Contact marks are minimal as desired, and the strike is much sharper than normal for this issue, showing a good full horn and a partly split tail.
