Description

1918-S Buffalo Nickel, MS65+
Among the Finest Certified

1918-S 5C MS65+ PCGS. CAC. While this San Francisco date is not rare in an absolute sense (nearly 5 million coins were struck), Gem and finer examples are extremely challenging to locate due to quality of strike. Widely spaced dies at the Mint combined with eroded, worn dies to make well-struck coins the exception rather than the rule.

This example is bold for the issue. Only minor softness exists on the braid knot and on the braid itself, with the rest of the hair detail sharp. A heavy die crack runs from the rim through the date and to the lower part of the braid knot. The bison is bold except for the shoulder and leg. PCGS awarded the Plus designation to this coin for its above-average details and eye appeal. The surfaces are iridescent and reflective, with lovely pastel shades throughout. Just three coins are certified numerically higher by PCGS and NGC combined. PCGS population: 36 in 65 (2 in 65+), 1 finer (4/14).(Registry values: N7079)
