Description

1919 Five Cent, MS68
The Finest Certified

1919 5C MS68 NGC. The 1919 Buffalo nickel was made in large quantities (exceeding 60 million pieces) just after the peak of the World War I economic boom while business was still strong. The issue is common in all grades through near-Gem, and even Gems can be obtained without too much difficulty. Premium Gems are scarce, and pieces grading any finer are a significant condition rarity.
The MS68 offering in the present lot represents the finest certified example. Its brightly lustrous surfaces display a delicate mix of ice-blue, orange, and lavender patination in the centers that yields to yellow-gold at the borders, with rainbow iridescence clinging to the obverse margin. The design elements are sharply impressed, including boldness on all letters and digits, and each side has been impeccably preserved. A couple of unobtrusive marks concealed in the hair above the braid become visible only under high magnification. This piece will satisfy the most discriminating collector, and will serve as the hallmark of a high-grade Buffalo nickel collection. This coin has never traded hands at public auction. It should be interesting to see how this unique MS68 is valued among knowledgeable bidders.
