Description

1919-D Premium Gem Nickel
Above-Average Strike

1919-D 5C MS66 NGC. The 1919-D Buffalo is a significant strike rarity. While the current Premium Gem exhibits the usual softness on the hair above the bison's forehead, the remaining design features are much better defined than typically seen. The date, LIBERTY, and the braid are bold, and the tip of the horn, often indistinct even on Mint State coins, is sharp. Lustrous surfaces display extremely soft ice-blue, lilac, and champagne patina, and are nicely preserved. Recently the 1919-D in MS66 has realized prices in the $8,000 to $10,000 range. However, 5-6 years ago it was consistently bringing $14,000 to $18,000. With only three coins certified by NGC in MS66 (11/11), this may spell opportunity for the astute buyer.
