Description
Attractive 1920-D Buffalo Nickel, MS66
1920-D 5C MS66 PCGS. Following this issue, a three-year span passed before the Denver Mint would strike nickels again. Several factors were at work, though Lange (2006) cites financial slowdown as the culprit, in that "... the huge mintages of minor coins prompted by the wartime boom of 1916-20 collided with the severe economic recession of 1921-1922." The coins already in circulation were sufficient for the nation's reduced needs, and so no more were struck. This piece is one of unusual quality, particularly for this issue. While the strike shows some softness at the highpoints, it has above-average detail nevertheless, and the softly lustrous surfaces have pleasing lavender, blue, and gold toning overall. The suitably preserved fields are worthy of the Premium Gem designation. Exceptionally rare in such condition; just one piece has received the MS66 grade from NGC, and this is the only example so certified by PCGS, with none finer at either service (2/07).(Registry values: N4719)
