    Description

    Pleasing Near-Gem 1920-S Buffalo Nickel

1920-S 5C MS64 PCGS. Well known as one of the premier strike rarities in the Buffalo nickel series. Or, as David Lange wrote in his book on Buffalo nickels, "The worst ones look like wax coins left to melt in the sun." Circulation also took a heavy toll on most of the 9.68 million pieces produced. While relatively available in lower, circulated grades, Mint State pieces are exceptionally difficult to locate. The surfaces of the currently offered example have a glossy, semi-prooflike appearance that is occasionally seen on Buffalo nickels. Both sides display an olive-gold patina that is most attractive, and there are a number of wispy, superficial blemishes throughout, mostly near the centers. The peripheral regions exhibit the orange-peel texture commonly attributed to die erosion, a well known striking issue for this date. A pleasing near-Gem overall, suffering only slightly from the aforementioned flaws. Population: 174 in 64, 16 finer (4/03). (NGC ID# 22RS, PCGS# 3946)

    Weight: 5.00 grams

    Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
