1921-S Nickel, MS66
Tied for Finest, Sole CAC Example

1921-S 5C MS66 PCGS. CAC. The glut of millions of 1921-dated Morgan dollars issuing forth largely subsumed all Mint resources for the year, and all other mintages from Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco in 1921 were token issuances in comparison, save for the 1921-P cent. The 1921-S nickel saw slightly more than 1.5 million pieces coined, and most were struck from overworked, overused dies. Some examples also show planchet streaks or laminations. This Premium Gem, certified in a green-label holder, is tied for the finest certified of the date with a handful of others. Some metal flowlines appear in the fields, most prominently before the profile, and actually enhance the already-bold luster. The surfaces are well-preserved front and back, complementing attractive pinkish-gold patina. A small die crack runs from the Indian's lower nose to the rim nearby. The strike is somewhat soft on the bison's head and shoulder, but contact marks are minimal. Of the dozen submissions combined at NGC and PCGS, this is the sole example with the CAC approval, a factor that prospective bidders will want to take into account.
