    Description

    Gem 1921-S Nickel

1921-S MS 65 PCGS. The 1921-S is one of the rarest dates in the series and is difficult in grades higher than VF, ranking 8th rarest out of the 64 issues in the series. This date, with its mintage of only 1.55 million pieces, has proved to be scarce since the year of issuance. Other dates from the 1917-26 time frame may be strike rarities only, but the '21-S has a compounded problem with many of the surviving coins showing planchet laminations and flakes from apparent hurried work in the mint. This piece was struck from a smooth, problem-free planchet. The only mint-made flaw is a fine die crack that runs from the obverse rim at 3 o'clock inward onto the portrait of the Indian. The obverse is absolutely complete in its detailing, with hair separation all the way down to the knot in the braid. The reverse is just a bit less defined with only slight softness of highpoint detail, most notably on the matted hair of the bison. The surfaces appear perfectly preserved with no obvious abrasions or carbon spots. Attractively toned with a mixture of golden-rose and lilac patina over both sides and bright, underlying mint luster. Population: 33 in 65, only 4 finer (6/95). (NGC ID# 22RU, PCGS# 3948)

    Weight: 5.00 grams

    Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel
