Elite Premium Gem 1923-S Nickel

1923-S 5C MS66 NGC. Coin production historically has been a lagging indicator of economic performance, as their manufacture at the Mint is a response to circulation demand. The post-World War I economic slowdown from 1919 to 1921 affected coinage output but did not come to a head until 1922, when the only circulating denominations produced were cents, Peace dollars, and double eagles.
When regular production returned in 1923, almost all the minor coins struck were put into circulation. For the 1923-S nickel, that created a condition rarity above the Gem level. This Premium Gem has gold-orange peripheral toning around a blue-violet core and subtly frosted luster. The bison's shoulder is soft but the horn is intact. Census: 6 in 66, 1 in 66 ★ , 0 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079)
