Description

1923-S MS 64. A very scarce, near-gem example of this seldom seen San Francisco nickel. Such pieces are uncommon and ranked by Lange as R.4 in this grade. This is a pleasing, well balanced coin that is not fully struck up, but does show good definition on the design elements. The satiny surfaces display rich overlays of gray-olive-golden patina on both sides and light flyspecks of carbon. There is a horizontal planchet lamination on the belly of the bison that limits the technical grade of the coin, but has little effect on the desirability of the piece. Overall, a pleasing coin for the grade that should fit nicely into a high grade set of Buffalo nickels.
