Description

1924-D Nickel, An Exceptional MS65

1924-D 5C MS65 PCGS. CAC. This year saw the first coinage of nickels in the Denver Mint since 1920. Sporting a mintage of 5.2 million pieces, the 1924-D was considered very rare in mint condition until the 1990s when a number were released by the Connecticut State Library, and dozens were auctioned by Heritage. Soft violet patina embraces the lustrous surfaces of the present Gem offering. The design elements exhibit a better strike than typically encountered. The Indian's braid, bison's horn and tail, and all letters are sharp. The hair above the bison's forehead is weak but not flat as typically occurs on this date. The above-average strike, pleasing luster, and impeccably preserved surfaces are appropriately recognized by CAC. PCGS has graded only three pieces finer and NGC one finer (3/14).
