1924-D Nickel, Toned MS66
Tied for Finest Certified

1924-D 5C MS66 PCGS. Despite a mintage of more than 5.2 million coins, the 1924-D Buffalo nickel had a limited survival rate in Gem condition, and Premium Gems are genuine rarities. Attrition and poor preservation account for most of this but, many would-be high-grade coins exhibit enough striking weakness to hinder them in that regard. The Denver Mint had memorable difficulty during the 1920s with producing sharp strikes, partly due to the practice of using working dies well beyond their normal lifespan as a cost-saving measure. The present coin was struck with dies in an advanced state, showing moderate erosion in the recesses on each side. Yet, the motifs are better defined than usual, with the only mentionable weakness seen on the bison's shoulder. Both sides are satiny and attractively toned in iridescent gold and lavender-gray hues. Population: 7 in 66, 0 finer (6/15).(Registry values: N4719)
