Description

1924-D Buffalo Nickel, MS66
Tied for Finest Certified

1924-D 5C MS66 PCGS. No nickels were struck at the Denver Mint from 1921 through 1923 because there was no demand for the coins after the large production totals of the war years. The 1924-D Buffalo nickel claims a smallish mintage of 5.2 million pieces, reflecting the still marginal commercial demand. Accordingly, the 1924-D is among the most challenging Denver Mint issues of the series in today's market. Many of the high quality examples we know about today come from the holdings of the Connecticut State Library and were auctioned by Heritage in the 1990s.

The present coin exhibits an unusually sharp strike for the issue, which is often softly struck on the bison's head. The virtually flawless surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster, with outstanding eye appeal. No examples have been certified in higher numeric grades at either of the leading grading services.
