Desirable 1924-S Buffalo Nickel, MS65

1924-S 5C MS65 NGC. A key date in one of the most popular series in American numismatics. The low mintage of 1.4 million coins makes this issue difficult to locate in all grades. David Lange estimates that MS65 examples are quite rare, and David Bowers reports that he has never seen a coin with full details. The present coin is a particularly attractive and sharply struck example of this scarce date.
From a design by James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo nickel has been called the most "American" of all U.S. coins. Collector enthusiasm for the design has always been high, and the series was studied closely from its inception. Numismatists recognized the scarcity of the 1924-S early on, and virtually all examples were garnered from circulation during the 1930s. As a date, only the celebrated 1926-S has been more sought after.
This piece show delightful surface coloration on both sides in shades of silver-gold, and the notably sharp strike extends even to the often-weak letter tops of LIBERTY and the split tail on the bison. A memorable collector example, exceeded by only three pieces at NGC and one at PCGS (7/08).(Registry values: N4719)
