Near-Gem 1926-S Buffalo Nickel
1926-S 5C MS64 NGC. The 1926-S is considered the key-date in the Buffalo nickel series, from a mintage of just 970,000 coins, the only Buffalo date-mintmark issue with a mintage of less than 1 million coins. This satiny Mint State piece has soft luster with lovely pale gray and gold toning, blended with hints of pale blue. While the strike is a little soft as usual, the overall eye appeal is most impressive. At first glance this piece has the appearance of a full MS65 grade. Perhaps it is only the inadequate strike that prevented such a grade. Census: 84 in 64, 8 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22S7, PCGS# 3959, GSID# 3129)
