Challenging Near-Gem 1926-S Nickel

1926-S 5C MS64 NGC. Gem examples of the 1926-S Buffalo nickel are almost never seen in the marketplace, so for series fans, the near-Gem level is the best they can aspire to for this challenging issue. This is a silver-gray example with tinges of gold and pink. Muted mint luster proceeds from each side, a bit more prominently on the reverse, which also shows the typical worn state of the die. The horn is nevertheless full but incompletely detailed, and a part of a split tail shows. Some caramel and hazel toning streaks appear beneath the bison, adding to the generous appeal. NGC has certified only 11 specimens finer (2/10).
