Attractive Near-Gem 1926-S Nickel

1926-S 5C MS64 PCGS. The low-mintage 1926-S nickel was not recognized as particularly elusive until nearly a decade after its release, when cardboard coin folders with printed mintage statistics became popular. As a result, the vast majority of survivors are circulated, and Mint State pieces better than Select are elusive. This Choice example is well-defined for the issue with particular sharpness on the horn, though the bison's shoulder and the Indian's braid show trifling softness. Luminous gold-orange patina drapes minimally marked surfaces with quicksilver luster. PCGS has graded just 11 finer representatives (8/08).(Registry values: N4719)
