Series Key 1926-S Buffalo Nickel
A Lovely MS64 Example
1926-S 5C MS64 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint made cents,
nickels, dimes, and quarters in 1926, but each denomination was
produced in minuscule quantities with respect to its series. The
Lincoln cent had the largest quantity, at 4.5 million coins. In the
case of the Buffalo nickel, the emission was only 970,000
coins--the sole business strike production in the series below 1
million. In addition to being an absolute rarity, the 1926-S is
also a conditional rarity with Gems all but unknown and any Mint
State coin very scarce.Mint luster glows beneath the iridescent rose and lilac toning that covers each side of the present near-Gem specimen. Some high-point definition is lacking on the obverse, with the usual softness above the braid knot. The reverse is noticeably better-struck. The only noticeable abrasion is a mark about halfway up braid. A splendid example of this challenging issue. PCGS has certified only 11 coins finer (8/10).(Registry values: N4719)
