Near-Gem 1926-S Buffalo Nickel

1926-S 5C MS64 PCGS. As the sole circulation-strike Buffalo nickel issue with a sub-million mintage, it is little wonder that the 1926-S is a perennial collector favorite. While David Lange's Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels cautions that the date's rarity is overstated in VF and XF grades, for AU and better coins, the reputation is accurate. Few collectors will have the chance to own an example better than this near-Gem, as PCGS has graded just 11 coins finer as of (8/10). The present piece has strong quicksilver luster beneath rich sunset-orange patina that shows occasional mix-ins of gold and nickel-gray. Struck from a worn reverse die, as commonly seen, but attractive nonetheless.
