    Description

    1926-S Buffalo Nickel, MS64
    Sought-After, Low-Mintage Key

1926-S 5C MS64 PCGS. The 1926-S Buffalo nickel claims the smallest regular-issue mintage of the series, at a meager 970,000 pieces. Despite being struck on good quality planchets, the 1926-S was not a well-made issue. The reverse dies were well-worn leftovers from earlier years and most examples seen show weakness on the bison's head and shoulder, as well as the peripheral legends. Although the 1926-S was heavily saved from circulation in later years, it remains a sought-after key to the series, especially in high grade.

The present coin is an attractive Choice specimen that shows a better-than-average strike, with just a touch of the usual softness on the bison's shoulder and the hair above the braid. The well-preserved surfaces are lustrous and appealing, with subtle highlights of greenish-gold and lavender toning. PCGS has graded 16 numerically finer examples (7/18).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 22S7, PCGS# 3959)
