Shimmering MS64 1926-S Nickel

1926-S 5C MS64 PCGS. Recognized for decades as the key to the regular Buffalo nickel series, a mere 970,000 pieces were struck. This, of course, means the '26-S is scarce in all grades, and it is a notable rarity in mint condition. As a strike rarity, this issue's status is beyond comparison in the series. The coins simply did not leave the San Francisco Mint with full definition. As Lange states in his third edition: "Worn reverse dies are the norm for 1926-S. These were probably leftovers from previous years, since dateless dies could be used until they failed completely."
This piece has bright mint luster with a metallic sheen, rather than the frosted finish one might expect from a San Francisco product. Better struck than many 1926-S nickels, but of course still lacking highpoint definition. Pale iridescent toning is seen over each side.(Registry values: N4719)
