Beautifully Toned Gem 1926-S Nickel
Among the Series' Most Conditionally Elusive Issues

1926-S 5C MS65 PCGS Secure. There are few Buffalo nickel issues that most collectors would agree on as the "absolute key" to the series; just as is the case with other contemporaneous series, say Lincoln cents from 1909-1933, so much depends on condition, and demand for a coin in that condition. Many collectors might never hope to own a 1913-S Type Two in MS67 and would cheerfully opt for a nice Choice or Gem example at a fraction of the price.

The situation is much the same with the early Lincoln cents. A Gem Red or near-Gem Red 1909-S VDB is considered "a key" to the series; even if not a rarity in any absolute sense, it is a coin, and in a condition, in which there is tremendous demand. Most collectors will never attempt, however, to put together a set of early Lincolns or classic Buffalo nickels in MS67. Even if they made the attempt, such a set is not, and will never be, completable.

On the other hand -- Gem condition is a level that many collectors strive for to complete their series, a stretch goal, admittedly, whether the collection be Morgan dollars, Lincoln cents, Buffalo nickels ... the list goes on and on.

The 1926-S Buffalo nickel is one such stretch goal in Gem condition, but the present example is certainly a coin that will make the multitudes of series fans give it due consideration. Members of PCGS CoinFacts can see a depiction of this Gem on that website in the featured position. The beautifully toned surfaces display ice-blue centers surrounded by golden-rose at the margins of each side. Terrific, softly frosted mint luster prevails throughout. The strike is sharp while not quite full, showing minor high-point softness on each side. The only mentionable distractions -- and they are minor -- are a couple of dark flecks visible with a loupe, one in the center of the Indian's cheek and two lesser ones behind and below the mouth. The eye appeal is nonetheless extraordinary. Population: 12 in 65, 0 finer (3/13).
