    Finest Known 1928-D Nickel, MS67
    Bright Surfaces and Attractively Toned

1928-D 5C MS67 ★ NGC. The 1928-D is not a scarce issue in the absolute sense, especially in the lower grades of Uncirculated. The abundance of low-end Mint State coins was created because of the availability of earlier dates in the late-1920s. It was scarce shortly after minting, as explained by David Lange, but 10 years later was available in roll quantities from a wide variety of dealers of the day. This piece typifies the bright, sparkling mint luster this issue is so well known for. But there is nothing truly typical about this coin. Not only is the luster bright and shimmering, but the strike is sharply defined in all areas and there are no obvious or detracting marks (nor would any be expected from a coin in this grade). Lovely iridescent toning is splashed across the obverse, while the reverse is covered with rich reddish patina. This is by far the finest 1928-D nickel known. There are no MS67 (non-Star) pieces certified by either major service, and NGC has only graded four coins in MS66 (11/11). This is the first time this important nickel has been offered for sale at public auction.
