Description

Splendid 1928-S Buffalo Nickel, MS66
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1928-S 5C MS66 PCGS. The 1928-S Buffalo nickels would not be on anyone's short list of the most elusive S-mint issues in the series, but they are nonetheless difficult in the higher Mint State grades, usually due to strike deficiencies or planchet quality. All examples known are of the Small S variety, although Lange's third edition series reference makes tantalizing note of the possibility (not probability) of a Large S variety awaiting discovery one day. In MS66 this piece is one of the finest half-dozen examples certified at PCGS (9/09). Both sides exhibit typical, original silver-gold coloration, with a better-than-average strike. Some light orange-peel effect is the product of die erosion.(Registry values: N4719)
