Description
1928-S Buffalo Nickel, MS66
Rare, Nearly in the Condition Census
1928-S 5C MS66 PCGS. This San Francisco issue is readily
available through MS64, with low-end Mint State pieces to be found
in abundance in raw form at various coin shows and conventions.
However, certified high-end pieces become scarce in MS65, and they
are notably rare any finer. We have previously handled a Premium
Gem example of this date on only 28 occasions, including many
appearances of several individual coins. Just a handful of these
have appeared in our auctions in the last decade, and the most
recent PCGS coin to make an appearance was the MS66+ PCGS piece in
our September 2020 Dallas Signature, which realized $16,800.The current offering boasts lovely champagne luster over mostly untouched surfaces. Perhaps only a single mark on the tip of the Indian's nose serves as a pedigree marker. Light die clashing is apparent on each side, but there is no obvious metal flow, and the strike is impressively almost full throughout. Population: 22 in 66 (2 in 66+), 2 finer (8/25).(Registry values: N4719)
