Description
1928-S Nickel, MS67
Among the Finest Certified
Obvious Registry Set Contender
1928-S 5C MS67 NGC. The 1928-S has long been rumored to have
two mintmark sizes -- a Large S and Small S -- although positional
differences and other factors such as die wear seem to account for
most of the perceived size variations. Other 1928-S denominations
have two mintmark sizes, adding to the discussion. The Heritage
archives offer numerous high-grade examples for study to answer the
question once and for all. This MS67 coin would fall in the Large S
camp if there is indeed a discernible difference in mintmark
sizes.Lustrous, smooth surfaces and exceptional eye appeal collaborate to make this Superb Gem 1928-S one of just five pieces to be awarded such a high grade at both NGC and PCGS combined. Brilliant, satiny nickel-gray fields and devices are essentially untoned and sharply struck for the issue, while there are no marks of any significance to mention. Census: 3 in 67 (1 in 67+★ ), 0 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N4719)
