Description

1931-S Buffalo Nickel, MS67
Vibrantly Toned Registry-Grade Piece

1931-S 5C MS67 CACG. The Great Depression started an economic downturn in 1929 that ultimately lead to the Mint reducing coinage production in the early 1930s. Only 1.2 million buffalo nickels were struck in 1931, with the entire production coming out of San Francisco. Despite the relatively low mintage, the 1931-S was heavily collected and saved. Mint State availability is remarkably strong, with ample quantities through Gem. However, MS66 pieces become more challenging, and MS67 examples are the finest available and are conditionally scarce.
This magnificent Superb Gem is well-struck with only faint softness on the central design elements. The pristine surfaces are layered in frosty luster that enhances vibrant shades of lavender, emerald, yellow-gold and ice-blue for an exceptional cartwheel effect and dazzling eye appeal. Neither PCGS nor NGC report any finer examples, not even a Plus-graded piece (2/26). Housed in a CACG holder with its implicit CAC endorsement.(Registry values: N2998)
