Description

1936-D FS-901 Nickel, VF35
3 1/2 Legs, CAC

1936-D 5C 3 1/2 Legs, FS-901, VF35 PCGS. CAC. The conditionally rare FS-901 displays the bison with the right front leg greatly diminished due to over-zealous die polishing. Aside from the aforementioned half-leg, this Choice VF example shows well-defined devices on gunmetal-gray patina accented with hues of charcoal within the recesses and borders. The surfaces are attractive and exhibit even wear with no significant abrasions or distractions. Moreover, this oft-overlooked Guide Book variety is endorsed with a CAC green sticker and at VF35 sits well over the average example at PCGS, where only two Mint State pieces are attributed (9/25) -- not to be confused with the more frequently seen 1937-D Three Legs issue.
Ex: Boston Rarities (Bowers & Merena, 8/2010), lot 302.
