    Immaculate 1937-D Three-Legged Variety--The Finest Quality Obtainable

1937-D Three-Legged MS 66 PCGS. It is rare when an error in U.S. coinage can be traced to the individual who was responsible for creating that error. In 1937, a Mr. Young, who was then new to the mint and under pressure to complete a quota of coinage, took an emery stick and ground off evidence of die clashing from a pair of nickel dies. But in his haste he also inadvertently ground off part of the foreleg of the bison. Only one pair of dies was so affected and mint state examples are very rare, although lower grade, circulated coins are always available for a price. Gem examples are exceptionally difficult to locate and this is the first MS 66 we have seen or offered for sale at auction. The surfaces on this coin are simply glorious. The mint luster is bright and shimmers beneath the multicolored toning that covers both sides. While much of this coin's eye appeal is derived from the exquisite toning, the overall quality of the coin is "all there." Even the strike is complete. Population: 2 in 66, none are finer (6/95). (NGC ID# 22SX, PCGS# 3982)

    Weight: 5.00 grams
