Description

1937-D Three-Legged Nickel, MS64+
Lustrous and Well-Struck

1937-D 5C Three-Legged, FS-901, MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Perhaps the best known lapped die variety in numismatics, along with the 1922 No D cent. Overenthusiastic die polishing at the Mint removed much of the bison's right front leg. The granular back leg, and the trail of minute die lumps beneath the bison's belly, provide further diagnostics for FS-901. The typical example grades XF, but the present coin is a near-Gem with dynamic luster and wisps of straw-gold and pale blue toning. The strike definition is much stronger than usually seen with good details on the Indian's hair and over the bison's horn.
