Description
1937-D Three-Legged Nickel, MS64+
FS-901, Famous Guide Book Variety
High End for the Grade, CAC
1937-D 5C Three-Legged, FS-901, MS64+ PCGS. CAC. One of the
great 20th century numismatic curiosities and a transcendent
variety that appeals to collectors of many specialties, the 1937-D
Three-Legged nickel helped inspire one of the greatest influxes of
new collectors to the hobby, the likes of which has not been
repeated to this day, except (perhaps) by the 1955 doubled die cent
and the 1943 bronze planchet off-metal cent errors. This is a resplendent, high-end example, with the bison's missing foreleg glaringly obvious, and diagnostic weakness at its hind leg as well. The strike is characteristically sharp despite numerous areas of die erosion typical of the variety. Gold and lilac shades shine, illuminated by bright mint luster that gives this Plus-graded, near-Gem excellent eye appeal. The coin's CAC endorsement is key for the issue in high grades. CAC: 46 in 64, 36 finer (7/23).
