    1937-D Three-Legged Nickel, MS65
Early NGC Slab, CAC Green Label

1937-D 5C Three-Legged, FS-901, MS65 NGC. CAC. During the 1920s and 1930s, the branch mints made every effort to extend the life of working dies. Minor cracks and metal flowlines produced by extended stress in the die steel could often be temporarily effaced by lapping the die, a process that involved "grinding" a worn die face into a lap (a finely curved metal head that would make contact with the fields without distorting their plain) coated in an abrasive compound that would aggressively polish the most worn parts of the die. This practice extended die life in many case, but it also resulted in the weakening of shallow design elements in the die as metal was polished away. One of the most extreme cases of this phenomenon is the 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo nickel. The reverse die was ground down to the point were the shallow forward right leg of the bison was almost entirely effaced.

This variety is sought-after today in all grades, and Gem examples are especially scarce. The present example is CAC endorsed. Smooth, satiny mint luster yields warm golden toning over each side, with no distracting abrasions seen. The bison's shoulder exhibits a touch of strike weakness, but the peripheral elements such as the bison's head and the Indian's headdress feathers are bold. Housed in a prior generation holder. Census: 0 in 65, 0 finer. CAC: 34 in 65, 6 finer (10/19). (NGC ID# 22SX, Variety PCGS# 38475, Base PCGS# 3982)
