1937-D Buffalo Nickel, MS66
FS-901, Three-Legged Variety
Only Two Certified Finer

1937-D 5C Three-Legged, FS-901, MS66 NGC. The demand for nickels during The Great Depression declined dramatically as the economy stalled. Ultimately, nickel production was suspended in Denver in 1930 and 1931, and then nationwide in 1932 and 1933. The recovery was slow, but nickels were struck again in 1934, and by 1936 the Denver branch mint was striking record-high mintages. The 1936-D and the 1937-D became the two largest issues in the Denver series. During this period, however, the branch mint pushed the working dies to their limits, often using them for production long after extensive cracking or lapping had occurred. The 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo nickel is a product of excessive die fatigue and overzealous lapping by a pressman.
This lustrous and sharply struck Premium Gem has all the eye appeal of the finest regular 1937-D nickels, although slight die wear is seen on the motifs. As in all FS-901 pieces, the bison's forward right leg is entirely missing except for its hoof. The smooth fields are untoned, save for a charming halo of iridescent lilac and sea-green around the bison's lone front leg. This famous and popular variety is seldom seen in MS66, and NGC and PCGS report only two numerically finer examples, combined (3/26).
