Choice 1937-D Buffalo Nickel
Prized Three-Legged Variety

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS64 PCGS. CAC. FS-901. The 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo nickel is one of the most famous and sought-after error coins in the U.S. federal series. The 1937-D was produced in large numbers, and the dies were used until they developed heavy erosion problems, and one set of dies clashed. Mint employees tried to erase the clash marks by polishing the die surfaces. An unintended consequence of this procedure was the eradication of the bison's leading foreleg. The error went unnoticed, and the coins were released, most examples surfacing in Montana. The variety was discovered almost immediately, and became a prime target for coin hunters. Its popularity remains undiminished today.
The present coin is a well struck Choice example, patinated in attractive shades of ice-blue and gold. The luster is a trifle subdued, as David Lange notes the overworked dies caused the coins to have "very diffused light reflection." Overall, this coin possesses excellent visual appeal.(Registry values: N2998)
