    Three-Legged 1937-D Nickel, MS65
    Lustrous and Surprisingly Clean

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS65 PCGS. CAC. FS-901. The 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo has been crudely counterfeited for decades. Its popularity became widespread in the late 1930s, soon after its release and publication in Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine. But such counterfeits are an exercise in futility, and most of them are little more than crude attempts to efface the fourth leg. Any numismatist worth his/her salt would spot such shams in a moment. Although the crucial diagnostics lie on the reverse, only one die pair was used to produce the variety. There are so many authenticating diagnostics on both sides of the coin that a seasoned professional should be able to identify a Three-Legged Buffalo merely by examining the obverse. Those diagnostics are described in great detail on some of the examples in our Permanent Auction Archives. This is a lovely example of this popular variety. The surfaces are satiny, and even, light golden toning covers both sides. The only grade-limiting marks are on the bison's upper back. Population: 51 in 65 (2 in 65+), 6 finer (10/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 22SX, PCGS# 3982)
