    1937-D Three-Legged Nickel, MS65
    Most Popular Buffalo Variety

    1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS65 PCGS. CAC. FS-901. The 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo, despite its interesting status as a die-polishing error, is nonetheless one of the most popular varieties in all of American numismatics. It is widely collected alongside the regular series issues from 1913 through the 1938, and it is without a doubt more popular (and more available) than other varieties in the series such as the 1916 Doubled Die Obverse and the 1918/7-D overdate.

    The popularity of the "Three-Legged Buffalo," as it is called for short, suggests other collections that could be formed besides a "complete set of Buffalo nickels" (however one chooses to define that term). How about a Most Popular 20th Century Varieties set? Such a set might include a:

    --1955 Doubled Die Lincoln cent;
    --1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo nickel;
    --1942/1-P or 1942/1-D Mercury dime;
    --1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter; and a
    --1909/8 Saint-Gaudens twenty dollar gold.

    And there you have it: A nice five-piece set of major 20th century varieties, cent through double eagle and including copper, nickel, silver, and gold coinage metals. Of course, that is only one of innumerable possibilities when it comes to collecting. There are no rules!

    This is a simply gorgeous Three-Legged nickel, pinkish-blue surfaces complementing glints of gold near the obverse rims, with no distractions on either side.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 22SX, PCGS# 3982)
