    Description

    High Grade Three-Legged 1937-D Nickel
    MS66, Few Certified Finer

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS66 NGC. FS-901. In his 1988 Encyclopedia, Walter Breen blames the existence of FS-901 on a hapless "Mr. Young," but if he was indeed the culprit, he would be a hero to the Buffalo nickel community. Perhaps no die abrasion error is as well known as the 1937-D Three-Legged nickel, although collectors of the series also chase various two-feather and 3-1/2 leg varieties. Most examples of FS-901 are in circulated grades, but here is a lustrous and essentially pristine Premium Gem, attractively toned in fire-red, apple-green, and lemon-gold shades. Two MS66 NGC examples sold for $57,500 in 2008 Bowers and Merena auctions, and we expect the present older holder example to challenge that figure. Census: 16 in 66, 4 finer (11/11).
