Description

1938-D/S Buffalo Nickel, MS67+
Guide Book Variety, Tied Finest at PCGS

1938-D/S 5C FS-511 MS67+ PCGS. CAC. The Mint intentionally modified S-Mint dies to create no fewer than six minor variations of the D/S overmintmark, since the Denver Mint was designated to strike the final production year of Buffalo nickels. By far, perfect D nickels outnumber the overmintmarked varieties. Among those with D/S, the FS-511 is the most desired with the prominent top of an underlying S visible above the multiple D punches. This exceptional example is tied for finest-known at PCGS by virtue of the Plus designation and CAC endorsement. Ice-blue and flax-gold patina add generous eye appeal to the razor-sharp, essentially unmarked surfaces. Population: 18 in 67+, 0 finer (6/17). CAC: 1/0.
