Description

1938-D/S 5C FS-511 MS67 PCGS. CAC. The Cherrypickers' Guide lists five die varieties of overmintmarked 1938-D/S nickels, but FS-511 is certainly the most dramatic among those. It is also the variety photographed in the 2020 Guide Book, on page 137. The top of the undermintmark S looms above the Denver mintmark, which is also strongly repunched south. This lustrous high-grade example displays lavish sea-green and rose-red toning. Many 1938-D nickels were saved as the final year of the type, but the variety becomes scarce in the present quality. CAC: 46 in 67, 0 finer (4/19).
