Description

1938-D/S Nickel, Iridescent MS67+
CAC Approved, Outstanding Eye Appeal

1938-D/S 5C FS-511 MS67+ PCGS. CAC. This is a popular overmintmark variety, showing multiple D punches over an errant S. The Cherrypickers' Guide suggests that the over-punched mintmark was done deliberately to repurpose an unshipped San Francisco die for coinage at Denver. The possibility of the original S being a mistake punch also persists. This high-end Superb Gem displays luminous mint luster with delicate iridescence in the margins. Only a touch of strike softness is noted on the bison's shoulder and the hair immediately above the Indian's braid.
