1938-D/S 5C FS-511 MS68 NGC. Several different overmintmarked dies were prepared at the Philadelphia Mint die shop when it was determined that the San Francisco Mint would not strike any of the last-year Buffalo design, those dies instead going to the Denver Mint. This piece offers reddish-gold surfaces and pristine preservation, among the few finest of these popular overmintmarked varieties that "launched a generation of variety collectors," according to David Lange in The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels.
