Description

1938-D/S Buffalo Nickel, MS68
Prominent Overmintmark Variety
Among the Finest at PCGS

1938-D/S 5C FS-511 MS68 PCGS. Various overmintmark varieties exist for this final-year Buffalo nickel issue. The Mint was transitioning to the new Jefferson type, so when sending additional dies to Denver for coinage, San Francisco dies on hand were corrected to the Denver mintmark as opposed to producing new reverse dies specifically for Denver. This lofty MS68 example is well struck and luminous, with blended multicolor toning over each side. PCGS reports nine overmintmark coins this fine, all varieties included, with none numerically finer (3/25).
