Description

1938-D/S Buffalo Nickel, MS65
FS-512, Clear Overmintmark Variety

1938-D/S 5C FS-512 MS65 NGC. Several overmintmark varieties are documented for the 1938-D Buffalo nickel. FS-511 is the most prominent and famous, while FS-512 is easily the next most prominent. FS-512 is also about twice as scarce as FS-511 in attributed third party holders, although many examples may reside in unattributed slabs. A clear underlying S is visible within the primary D. This golden-tinged Gem example displays satiny luster and is generally well preserved, while the usual touch of central strike softness is not bothersome. Census (FS-512): 36 in 65, 41 finer (3/24).
