Description

1938-D/S Nickel, MS67+
Remarkable Multicolor Toning

1938-D/S 5C MS67+ PCGS. CAC. OMM-2. The lower curve of the undermintmark is obvious within the opening of the Denver mintmark. When it became clear that San Francisco would strike only the new Jefferson type, leftover Buffalo nickel dies were returned to Philadelphia, overmintmarked, and sent to Denver. Fortunately for today's collectors, the final year 1938-D mintage was set aside in roll quantity, and high grade examples are available. The present Superb Gem has something that a roll find cannot offer: magnificent cherry-red, forest-green, and honey-gold toning that deepens toward the rims.(Registry values: N1793)
