Description

1938-D/S Buffalo Nickel, MS68
Spectacular Multicolor Toning

1938-D/S 5C MS68 NGC. FS-511. There are several overmintmarked dies, but this is the most significant among them, since the S mintmark can be seen both above and within the D mintmark, which is repunched at the base. This is the variety photographed on page 134 of the 2013 Guide Book. The present coin, however, is even more noteworthy for its remarkable toning. Both sides are bathed in vivid lemon-gold, fire-red, lilac, and gunmetal shades. The lustrous surfaces are virtually immaculate, and the strike is good with only slight blending on selected peripheral elements such as the curve of the tail. The present coin was the first 1938-D/S to be graded MS68 by NGC, although over the past ten years it has been joined by five others, with 1 graded MS68 (7/12).
